A. Richard Newton Young Student Fellow Program

In honor of the memory of Dr. A. Richard Newton, the 50th Design Automation Conference is sponsoring an expanded Young Student Fellow Program. It is designed to assist young students at the beginning of a career in Electronic Design Automation and Embedded Systems. A Newton Fellow will receive financial travel support to attend DAC. Moreover, each Young Student Fellow will actively engage in DAC through a number of events including meetings with design automation luminaries, attendance at technical sessions and exhibits, participation in student-related events at DAC. Following a 50-year tradition, DAC strives to foster a vibrant and worldwide community of electronic design and embedded systems professionals. The fellowship actively supports the next generation. The focus of the program is to bring students into DAC who otherwise would not be able to come.
What is the Newton Young Student Fellow Award?
Each selected Newton Fellow will receive a free DAC full conference registration. Additionally, DAC will issue (partial) travel grants to cover travel expenses.
The awardee will have the opportunity to participate in the following activities during the conference.
- Kickoff meeting at the first speaker's breakfast on Tuesday
- Attendance at selected conference sessions, including sessions with Best Paper Award nominations
- Poster presentation introducing each Fellow (either current research, or relevant coursework/projects) during the DAC student event
- Attendance at the Awards Session
- Closing session during Thursday evening reception
- Use of social media (tweets, blogs, etc.) to provide timely news and feedback on events during DAC
The awardees are required to actively participate in all the events in this exciting program. A one-page report describing their experiences at DAC must be submitted and might be used for DAC publicity.
DAC has reserved funding and logistics for approximately 80 fellows. Travel grants will be assigned based on need, availability and actual cost.
Who can apply?
This program is open to young students worldwide, with preference given to:
- Junior or senior undergraduate students
- Students pursuing a Master’s degree
- Pre-candidacy PhD students (typically within the first two years of the doctoral program)
Additional requirements:
- The applicant’s advisor or the associated department/school must provide some matching funds for the travel grant
- The academic program must be relevant to the DAC community (e.g., CS, CE, EE or related fields)
- The applicant must not “double-dip”, i.e., must not receive any funding from other student-related activities at DAC (e.g., PhD Forum, DA Summer School, etc.)
How to apply for the Newton Young Student Fellow Award?
Please submit a 1-2 page PDF document with the following information:
- Your name, address, phone number and website. Also include the contact info of your advisor(s) and your institution.
- A few paragraphs describing yourself, your goals and your aspirations. Describe why you are interested in EDA and embedded systems as a career and what drives you in general. You may also include any other collateral information that you consider supportive of your application, such as a social media stream.
- A short description of what you are currently working on (e.g., the courses you are taking, projects, or early research).
- A clear estimate of your total travel expenses to/from Austin. Include airfare (if outside of Texas), lodging and living expenses. Expenses must be based on the lowest-cost mode of travel.
- A recommendation letter from your advisor or department head. The letter must clearly indicate the matching award for the travel grant.

- Submission Deadline: Sunday, March 31, 2013 or until funds are fully disbursed
- DAC Conference Participation: June 2 - 6, 2013
